They all bank on Britney
An editor's dream is to have a real-life soap opera unraveling in front of you, and Britney provides that every week," said Sarah Ivens, OK!'s U.S. editor. The magazine has a 10-person team in Los Angeles devoted to Spears coverage. Publisher Tom Morrisy said Spears drives newsstand sales and helped the magazine's ad revenue more than double to $51-million in 2007. OK! expects to turn a profit in 2008, three years after breaking into the market. Television Television ratings show that a major Britney Spears incident attracts viewers to each of the main entertainment news TV shows, too. "All of us sustained a major ratings spike" when Spears was taken to the hospital two weeks ago, said Charles Lachman, executive producer of Inside Edition. "It happens every time with her." It's more difficult to assess the economic gain for TV shows because they sell ads weeks in advance, with rates based on average expected ratings.

FBI investigating 14 companies for mortgage fraud
The FBI did not identify the companies. Neil Power, chief of the FBI economic crimes unit, attributed the increase "to good old-fashioned greed." "On insider trading, we're looking in some cases at whether executives were aware that the value of their holdings would be going down and the executives traded on that information," said Power. "On accounting fraud, we're looking at housing developers who may have reported cash reserve accounts to reflect falsely inflated values," he told CNN. Power and other senior officials said the number of suspicious activity reports they review for potential investigation skyrocketed from 3,000 in fiscal year 2003 to about 35,000 in 2006, to 48,000 in 2007. And in the first quarter of fiscal year 2008, Power said, officials have already received 15,000 such reports, putting them on pace to receive 60,000 complaints this year.
Four youths sought as B.C. teen set on fire
BURNABY, B.C. - A New Westminster, B.C., teenager was doused with gasoline and set on fire Monday night, police said Tuesday. "It's frightening something like this could happen but things have been getting worse around here for the last year," said Terri Roberts, who lives close to where the attack occurred. Roberts heard a commotion just before 10 p.m. "I would have gone outside because I've broken fights up before, but it just sounded like the noise kids make. We have a lot of trouble with kids around here - drinking and doing drugs - so the noise didn't sound out of the ordinary," said Roberts. .
