Aboriginal numbers soar, census shows

Canada's aboriginal population has increased 45 per cent over a decade and cracked the one-million mark for the first time since records have been kept, new census data indicate.

In 2006, 1,172,790 people said they were members of at least one of three aboriginal groups: North American Indian, Métis (mixed native-European descent) or Inuit.

The fastest gain in population of the three groups was in the Métis population, which almost doubled in 10 years. Those who identified themselves as Indian increased by 29 per cent, while the Inuit population went up 26 per cent.

Between 1996 and 2006, the aboriginal population increased 45 per cent, a rate nearly six times faster than the 8-per-cent growth for the non-aboriginal population over the same period.

Iraq War (2003-)

She was an excellent teacher, and I still feel sad when I think of her death.

The number of people killed in traffic accidents every year is daunting: 42,682 in 2006. That's more than the number of Americans killed in the Korean War and more than 10 times the number of Americans killed in Iraq.

At Elite Prep Schools, College-Size Endowments

EXETER, N.H. — When Curtis Thomas, a 14-year-old from a poor family living in St. Rose, La., arrived here two years ago to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, he brought little more than a pair of jeans and two shirts. That would hardly do at a 227-year-old prep school where ties are still required for boys in class.

Ypsilanti DDA weighs '06 payroll mistake

The Ypsilanti Downtown Development Authority is wrestling with an 18-month-old payroll mistake that gave its director an automatic 3 percent pay increase when he was hired in June 2006.

DDA Chairman Peter Rinehart said Director Brian Vosburg informed the DDA Board of Directors about the mistake. The board is evaluating Vosburg's performance and will address the issue next month, Rinehart said.

"If we need him to pay it back, Brian said he will," Rinehart said. "We're trying to reach an amicable solution."

April McGrath, the city's personnel director and assistant city manager, said Vosburg was hired on June 28 - three days before the city's fiscal year started on July 1. The city gave all non-union employees a 3 percent pay increase as a cost of living adjustment, and that included Vosburg, she said.

Plaxico's prediction doesn't upset Giant teammates

But no one criticized him for saying Monday that the Giants will beat the Patriots, 23-17. For a team that's been counted out before each of its last two playoff wins, no one thinks victory is out of reach against the perfect Pats.

"Are we supposed to say we're going to lose? What do you want us to say?" Antonio Pierce said yesterday at Super Bowl Media Day. "We want to win the game. We're not here to be second-best to anybody. We came here to win a game. If you want to consider that a guarantee, it's not. We're not going to think negative and say we're going to lose and have the same perception everybody else has about us."
