Retired minister goes out of his way to help other seniors
The many programs he's helped create include the Shepherd's Center of East Cooper; Grocery GoFor; Senior Wheels; and the Independent Transportation Network, a national affiliate he helped bring to the Lowcountry. Terry Brown, vice president of senior services for the Trident United Way, said Giffen always shows up to help wearing his trademark bow tie. "He is tremendously active and concerned about senior issues. He is just incredibly engaged," Brown said. Giffen also has been instrumental in lining up support to build a senior center for East Cooper residents. Giffen worked tirelessly with officials in Mount Pleasant and at East Cooper Regional Medical Center to help organize a partnership, Brown said. "Dick was the person pushing all of them to do this," he said. Giffen's work over the past decade has provided thousands of seniors, many of them homebound, with rides to the grocery store and transportation for other errands.
Subdivision proposed for old OSCVI site
A 60-lot subdivision of mostly single-storey brick townhouses is what local developer Barry Kruisselbrink has planned for the former OSCVI property. The 6.5-acre site just off 10th Street East just east of Owen Sound's downtown has been a vacant field since the former high school was levelled in 1999. Barry's Construction and Insulation Ltd., owned by Kruisselbrink, has submitted a draft plan of the subdivision to city hall, along with an application to change zoning from institutional to residential. A public meeting is to be held Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at city hall before the applications are considered by council. Kruisselbrink said if all approvals are granted, he hopes to begin servicing work in the summer or fall and building homes by the following spring.

Lutfi said in a telephone conversation, with Britney at his side: "They just barged in. They have an agenda. Their agenda is jealousy because they don't fit in. I do. They see her three times a year." .

Nguyen, who has a Web site advertising her private family and youth counseling business called Jasmine Healing and Counseling, also worked most recently for Options Counseling Services of Oregon Inc., a private nonprofit health care agency. The 15-year-old boy was not an Options client, the agency's executive director said. According to court records, prosecutors were preparing a criminal case against Jasmine Nguyen and had met with the 15-year-old to inform him about testifying before a grand jury. "He expressed reluctance to participate by testifying against Hanh Nguyen because he loved her and wanted to spend his life with her," wrote prosecutor Greg Moawad in a court document. The teenager was scheduled to testify on Dec. 7. By then, police say, he had run off with the older woman and the woman's husband and her teenage daughter.

Critics argued such a scenario never occurred, since the younger Kennedy was 3 years old when his father died in 1963. This was true, although much the same criticism could be said of Michelangelo's Pieta. The Virgin Mary holding her crucified Son in the tableau was not in her 50s, as she was when Christ died, and was sculpted to look three decades younger, according to Irving Stone's "The Story of Michelangelo's Pieta."Stung by the criticism, the Kennedy family asked Lewis to withdraw the design and work on a revised conception. Lewis agreed and his new design showed JFK alone, walking on a beach in casual attire. The initial location for the statue, Aselton Park overlooking Hyannis Inner Harbor, was also scrapped in favor of placing it in front of the JFK Museum on Main Street in Hyannis.
